Alyson, a friend of mine, is a big tea drinker. So am I.
Recently she and her husband bought a new condo apartment and invited me to a tea party. While helping her in the kitchen, I noticed that Alyson was filling a teapot right out of the faucet.
I became curious since in her old home the water pitcher was a must. I was polite and trying at least to touch a teacup by my lips. Steve, her husband, saw it, got up, opened a cabinet door under the sink and showed me his best under counter water filter system.
On the right-hand side, I noticed something looking like a large hairspray can. It was a water filter!
Wow! I was thinking: and this will filter water from the most known bad stuff for the next 12 months?
Hard to believe!
But when Steve told me how much it costs and who “installed” it, I was astonished and screamed, “I want it!”
For a long time after the inconvenience of using a Zero Water pitcher (especially for cooking!), I wanted a real deal.
A week later for my birthday, I’ve got a present—my own super-duper Epic Shield Water Filter!
Well, what is under your sink?
1. Smart Shield. How “Smart?”
My filter called “Smart Shield.”
As nosy as I am, I needed to know how “smart” it was.
If it was you, what would you check first? Of course, what it does. Right? This depends on the type of filter.
Among basic filtration systems are carbon and activated carbon, ceramic, distillation, mechanical, ozone and reverse osmosis. There are a few others. None of them are ideal and vary in their effectiveness, price, how easy to install and use and how echo-friendly they are.
What about Epic Smart Shield I’ve got?
It is an American-made and American-tested echo-friendly activated coconut carbon block filter.
What is a carbon block?
It’s when activated carbon turning in the form of blocks under high pressure. Activated carbon bonds with and removes contaminants as it goes through the filter. A carbon filter is more effective than some others since there is more surface area coming in contact with water. These filters also vary greatly, but Epic Smart Shield does stand out!
It removes 99.99% of over 70 known tap water contaminants while leaving the useful minerals. The list of what it filters is impressive:
- Bacteria (E.coli)
- Glyphosate (Roundup)
- Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
- Trace pharmaceuticals
So, is it “smart” enough for you?
2. Performance – Triple Crown Winner
I bet you would want to be sure that your filter removes everything they say it removes. True?
There is no luck here. You need proof!
As in any “audit”, you can only trust an independent reputable 3-rd party. But who is a subject matter expert?
The answer is the NSF International–the leading public health and safety organization, ANSI—American National Standards Institute and IAPMO, the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials. Good to know.
IAPMO as a reputable product evaluation agency, tested and triple-certified Epic Smart Shield against specific NSF/ANSI Standards:
- Standard 42 – not health-related, aesthetic impurities such as chlorine, taste, and odor;
- Standard 53 – health-related contaminants: lead, asbestos, mercury, VOC (volatile organic compounds);
- Standard 401 – emerging contaminants
Well, we are done with science!
3. Installation: Easy-Peasy
Now – how to. What is involved?
When you get your box, you will find:
- Mounting manifold (1)
- Connector hoses (2)
- Coldwater adapter (1)
- Screws (2)
- Epic Smart Shield filter cartridge (1)
I am an absolute novice, and it took me 20 minutes and three simple steps to install my Epic Smart Shield:
- Hanging the bracket
- Putting a filter on
- Placing an adapter inline to the cold water
(!) No drilling hole in your countertop to mount a dedicated tap like for reverse osmosis;
(!) No slow water trickles that it takes forever to fill a pot (there is some reduction in a flow which is normal);
(!) No call to a plumber and extra fee.
And even if it takes a little elbow grease, trust me–it’s just a little if you don’t know anything. I did it! Myself! So far, no evidence of any leakage. Make sure you twist your cartridge till the end.
→ Useful tip: If you live in an apartment, you can use durable Velcro to attach the filter manifold to the under sink wall.
Well, can you manage?
4. Customer Service with Personal Touch
Don’t you sometimes wish that today when everything is digital, you dial a direct number and not an answering service, and a human being helps you right away?
When I couldn’t find some information on the company’s website, I decided to “check out” it’s customer service and called the support line.
To my surprise, I was not on hold, and there was no silly music, no push this or push that number and no annoying “sorry for the inconvenience!” A nice lady picked up the phone right away. She was polite and helpful. The issue was resolved, and it was a pleasant experience. I felt I was important.
Instruction and web support information was also first-rate. I found in my box a “thank you” note which is a nice personal touch.
Great job, Epic Team!
Final Word – Customer for Life
In closing: Epic Smart Shield – it is excellent tasting water, 99% removal of most water contaminants, easy to install, good flow rate, affordable, gets the job done, made and tested in the USA and has awesome customer service.
What’s not to like?
And it’s the only non-reverse osmosis system that removes Chromium! Remember Erin Brockovich?
I can conclude that Epic Smart Shield is an excellent product on many fronts. But I also wish that Epic Water would add the following:
- An indicator – how well my filter is functioning over time. It would give me peace of mind.
- Different options for faucet finish since I’ve got a combo.
→ Take a Notice – if you have issues with fluoride, for drinking water you can use Epic Nano water filter pitcher. Fantastic duo!
So, a big compliment to Epic Smart Shield! It is my best case scenario and my final choice. I am a customer for life.
Bye-bye Zero Water!
Well, what is your best-case scenario?
